Online reviews play a big part in how people choose a local business. Google reviews in particular show up right where people are searching, in Google Search and Google Maps, so they affect both whether you're found and whether you're picked.
This post looks at how reviews affect your SEO and your Google Business Profile, how to get more of them without breaking Google's rules, and how GoHighLevel can take the legwork out of asking.
How Google reviews affect your SEO

- Local search ranking. Google says reviews are one of the factors it looks at for local results. More good reviews, and recent ones, can help you show up for searches near you.
- More clicks. A listing with a strong rating and plenty of reviews tends to get clicked more than one with three reviews from 2021.
- Trust. Reviews are social proof. People read them before they ring you, and they often decide based on what they read.
What reviews do for your Google Business Profile
- Visibility. Your Business Profile is often the first thing people see. Reviews help it stand out in Maps and the local results.
- Click-through rate. A good rating with a decent number of reviews makes people more likely to visit your website or call.
- Credibility. Reviews that mention what you did and where help a new customer picture working with you.
How to get more Google reviews
- Do a great job. It sounds obvious, but good reviews start with good service.
- Make it easy. Send people a direct link to your review form. The fewer clicks, the more reviews you'll get.
- Ask. Most happy customers are willing to leave a review. They just don't think to. Ask in person, by email or by text after the job.
- Reply to every review. Thank people for the good ones, and answer the bad ones calmly and helpfully. Future customers read your replies too.
Stay within Google's rules
This bit matters, because getting it wrong can get reviews removed. Google's review policy says businesses must not:
- Only ask happy customers. Filtering people first and only sending the review link to the ones who said they were pleased (often called review gating) isn't allowed. Ask everyone.
- Offer incentives. No discounts, freebies or payment in exchange for a review.
- Discourage negative reviews or pressure people while they're still with you.
Some review tools are set up to gate reviews by default, so it's worth checking how yours is configured.
Automating review requests with GoHighLevel
HighLevel has review request tools built in. You can send a review request automatically by text or email when a job is marked complete, follow up once if someone doesn't respond, and see and reply to your Google reviews from inside the platform.
We set this up for clients so every customer gets asked, at the right moment, without anyone having to remember, and so it stays on the right side of Google's rules.
In short
Google reviews help you get found and help you get chosen. Ask every customer, make it easy, reply to everything, and let your CRM do the reminding.
